Building strength from home has truly changed how I feel. I am more energized, stronger, and have even seen real improvements in my bone density. It reminded me that progress does not have to happen in a gym. It can start right where you are with just a few intentional steps.

In my last article (linked below), I shared how I began working out from home and how those simple routines helped me rebuild strength and support my bone health. I wanted to follow that with the exact tools that helped me stay consistent and actually enjoy the process. You do not need a full gym or fancy machines, just a few smart basics that make it easy to begin.

Below are the five essentials I recommend starting with. These are simple, effective tools that make it easier to stay consistent and confident from home.

2. Workout Gloves

Focus on palm protection for comfort and to avoid callouses.

3. Dumbbells

Start with 5, 8, 10, and 12 lb sets. If you’re already working out with weights, I recommend also having 15, 20, and 25 lb options. These are great for both progressive strength training and maintaining your current strength routine. **Choose neoprene-coated dumbbells as they’re safer to grip and smoother for overhead lifts than rubber-coated ones.

4. Stretch / Resistance Bands

You’ll want both long resistance bands and loop bands (for around your knees). Each type serves a different purpose. The long bands are great for upper-body strength and stretching, while loop bands target glutes, hips, and legs.

5. Adjustable Bench

A bench adds so much flexibility to your workouts. It is perfect for strength training, step-ups, and any upper- or lower-body exercises that feel more comfortable elevated rather than on the floor. If you’re just starting out, a sturdy chair can work too.

1. Exercise Mat

Choose a mat that’s thick enough to protect your knees when kneeling. Avoid anything too thin. The CAP Barbell Folding Mat (2x6) is very similar in thickness, feel, and durability to the one I use.

Bonus Pick: My Favorite Heart Rate Monitor

I’ve used the Polar H10 Heart Rate Monitor Chest Strap for over three years, and it’s still going strong. I love seeing how hard my heart is working and tracking progress over time. It helps me notice when I’m working too hard or not hard enough, so I can find that just-right effort where I feel strong but still have energy to finish my workout.

You do not need a big space or fancy equipment to see real results. You only need a few intentional pieces that support consistency and confidence. Start small, stay steady, and let strength and energy bloom from there.
